With the Tokyo Paralympics in his sights, Newcastle solicitor Ben Swain has switched from tennis to competitive cycling to boost his chances of representing Australia.
As a young boy, Ben Swain loved racing on mountain bikes with his brother Simon around Somersby on the NSW Central Coast. However, once he was at school, he turned his focus to tennis for 10 years.
Three years ago, having earned his place as a division-one tennis player, Swain, who was born with Split Hand and Foot Malformation, learned that only wheelchair tennis would be offered at the Paralympics. Demonstrating great determination, the then 33-year-old switched his passion to cycling.
