Thomas Victor Hurley grew up in Deepdene with summers at Point Lonsdale. He began his schooling at Glamorgan and then attended Melbourne Grammar. Tom was a bit of a nerd at school, with early signs that sporting prowess was probably going to elude him. However, his encyclopaedic knowledge of the events surrounding World War II did invite the suggestion that the political world may be of interest.
Tom studied law/commerce at the University of Melbourne, living at both Ormond and Trinity Colleges, and immersed himself in all aspects of university life.
In his second year at university in 1971 he was elected to the Student Representative Council (SRC), which began an involvement in politics and current affairs that obsessed him ever since.
