For Gabrielle Upton, the role of Attorney-General is a privilege – and one that requires balance, accessibility and the desire to give back. She speaks to CLAIRE CHAFFEY.
As the state’s first law officer, Gabrielle Upton leads a frantically busy existence. Yet amid appointments, interviews, events and tomes of reading, she still finds time to tweet her congratulations to players selected to play for the Blues in the State of Origin, or upload a picture from the NSW Young Lawyers Golden Gavel event.
An avid user of social media, Upton, who NSW Premier Mike Baird appointed State Attorney-General after the Liberal Party’s election win in March, embraces Twitter and Facebook as a way of breaking down barriers between herself and the general public.
“I think social media is very important,” the 50-year-old says in her offices at 52 Martin Place. “It is a way of sharing your experiences and, in my case, it is making my role a bit more understandable. You reach out to people as best you can, and social media is really the place they pick up interesting things that are happening.
